PCIS: Post Critical Incident Seminar
What is PCIS?
If youĀ think you may benefit from someĀ healing, restoration and a therapeutic week of support, education and compassion, you may want to attend a PCIS workshop.
Post Critical Incident Seminar (PCIS) is a structured, intensive 3½-day program designed to support law enforcement officers, corrections personnel, and their coworkers who have been impacted by significant critical incidents. These events can deeply disrupt lives, relationships, and job performance. The PCIS provides a pathway to healing through education, counseling, peer support, and guided discussion.
Participants are encouraged to attend with their significant others, recognizing that critical incidents impact the entire family system. The seminar includes content and activities designed to improve communication, strengthen relationships, and build shared tools for long-term resilience.
The PCIS format—originally developed by the FBI in 1983—has been widely recognized for its effectiveness in promoting recovery and resilience among first responders. The program is led by culturally competent mental health professionals and peer support staff who understand the unique occupational stressors faced by those in law enforcement and corrections.
In addition to trauma education, the seminar addresses the role of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the cumulative impact of chronic occupational stress, both of which can increase the risk of emotional distress, health concerns, and even police misconduct if left unaddressed. Through a safe, supportive environment, participants explore these contributing factors and learn practical tools to foster emotional regulation, connection, and post-traumatic growth.
The seminar emphasizes skills for resilience, improved communication, and self-awareness—empowering participants to move forward with strength and clarity in both their personal and professional lives.
